One wildflower in my mug I have not yet identified it is a delicate spray of tiny (one-sixteenth of an inch, perhaps) shiny brown bits floating cloudlike about a smooth bright green stem. Each bears a spray of dull purple wheat-like flowers that weight it down slightly. The Kentucky bluegrass is beside it, on a slim green stalk with strong yet hair-thin stems sprouting from it at one-inch intervals. Soft as Velcro strokedĪlong the grain, rough against it, the flowers are tiny green spears bunched tightly together into what looks to me like a cattail. To my untutored eye, it looks neither like one flower nor like many, but the latter is what it is. Still strong as a walking-stick, has a single slender green leaf rakishly spearing the air. Right now I am looking at little barley and Kentucky bluegrass! The first, picked hours ago yet It is a reminder to me that grasses flower, too. So far I have identified 37 types of wildflower in front of our cabin. Now it is the bits of color lurking underfoot as much as the bold splashes that compel my gaze.
